Garston Stories

Life in Garston – A Mother’s Story

I appreciate you’re very busy at the moment especially with the Veolia expansion- we are absolutely terrified by the plans and for Garston’s future. In a community where many can’t afford to feed their family, it feels near impossible task to raise £11,000 in legal defence – this is targeting some of the most defenceless in society, just as Grenfell did and plenty of other disasters. You have gone above and beyond in your efforts to appeal- thankyou.

I mentioned I’m a mum – throughout my pregnancy in 2022/23 midwives measured my carbon monoxide level as above normal levels – not high enough to be co2 poisoning but the level of a casual smoker (I have never smoked in my life). I had my boiler and car serviced and carried out checks in my workplace and these were all safe. I came to the conclusion (though unfortunately without conclusive evidence) that my symptoms must be a result of pollution in Garston. When I birthed my placenta, the midwife immediately asked if I was a smoker as it was covered in calcium pockets. My levels are still slightly high, and I’d be so curious if this is true of others living in Garston. My husband’s levels are normal however the midwife suggested this may be because he’s bigger and his body can handle the levels. I must stress that this is all my speculation and unfortunately I have no evidence to do anything with – just an anecdote to share with you.
